The Child Care WAGE$® Program is an education-based salary supplement program for child care educators employed in DHS Licensed Child Care agencies. This program provides eligible educators an annual award, issued in two parts, based on specific qualifications that include working at least six months in the same child care program with children birth to five years old for at least 10 hours a week.

The Waterborne and Zoonotic Diseases Program is responsible for tracking and responding to illnesses from animals and water. It does this by collaborating closely with local health departments, heath care providers and laboratories to collect information on any illnesses and investigate outbreaks. It also conducts prevention activities through outreach for individuals who own private wells. We also collaborate with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to respond to reports of harmful algae blooms.

Wilder Youth Development Center in Somerville, TN, is a secure, residential 24-hour facility for male youth who have been adjudicated delinquent for serious felony offenses, with the goal to improve behavior and independence for a successful return to the community. Comprehensive services are provided via case management in the following areas: education, recreation, medical health, and mental health & well-being (including group and individual counseling).

The Wilder-Naifeh Technical Skills grant (W-N) and TCAT Reconnect grant provide grants to individuals attending a Tennessee College of Applied Technology. W-N is a flat grant amount for students pursuing a certificate or diploma program. TCAT Reconnect is a last-dollar scholarship for students pursuing a certificate or diploma.

Withdrawal Management Services, which includes Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), are provided at West Tennessee State Penitentiary to combat the number of overdoses and to improve treatment retention. Services last at least seven weeks for inmates who have overdosed or have serious clinical needs. Approved inmates should be transferred for intervention due to acute clinical needs. Evidence-based substance use education is provided in this program with Substance Use Recovery Education (SURE). However, this is not a treatment program and is considered a mandatory housing assignment based on the individual having a drug overdose event.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides screening, counseling, and supplemental foods to low-income pregnant and postpartum breastfeeding women and supplemental foods to infants and children at risk due to inadequate nutrition. Through promotion and modification of food practices, this program seeks to minimize the risk of complications to mothers and children, maximize normal development, and improve the health status of the targeted high-risk population.

The Women’s Residential Recovery Court (WRRC) serves female non-violent felony offenders who are actively participating in a local recovery court, have a greater need for intensive substance abuse and/or co-occurring treatment services and supervision, and have not been successful in recovery court programming in their community. Participants receive treatment services for no more than twelve (12) months. Upon completion of the program, the participant transitions back to the referring community certified recovery court program to complete their sentence. This program is modeled after the evidence-based drug court model.

The federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) program is available to employers who invest in job seekers who have consistently faced barriers to employment. Employers can apply for and receive a certification verifying the new hire is a member of an eligible group before they can claim the tax credit.

Work-based learning (WBL) is a proactive approach to bridging the gap between high school and high-demand, high-skill careers in Tennessee. Students build on classroom-based instruction to develop employability skills that prepare them for success in postsecondary education and future careers. Through experiences like internships, apprenticeships, and paid work experience, juniors, and seniors (16 years or older) may earn high school credit for capstone WBL experiences. The WBL program also provides annual competitive grants to schools that have innovative ideas for students who face barriers to participating in work-based learning (WBL) placements off campus.

The WIOA Title III, Wagner-Peyser program seeks to improve the functioning of our state’s labor market by providing employment services to job seekers and employers through a network of American Job Centers, including training referrals, career counseling and job listings.

The Yellow DOT program is designed to supply first responders with an individual’s medical information in the event of a vehicle crash or other emergency. Participants indicate the presence of key medical information inside the vehicle with a yellow bumper sticker, allowing first responders to provide faster, more appropriate care. Any person who has a medical condition, allergy, or who takes daily prescriptions would benefit from this program.
