Crisis Stabilization Units (CSUs) in Tennessee are non-hospital, short-term stabilization programs available 24/7 that bring together the state’s walk-in, respite, and stabilization services into a single continuum of care. Individuals may first access help through Crisis Walk-In Centers, which provide face-to-face mental health assessments, 23-hour observation, referrals, and follow-up care. For those needing temporary support in a safe environment, Crisis Respite offers voluntary stays of up to 48–72 hours with medication support, peer counseling, and recovery services designed to stabilize individuals and link them to community resources. When a higher level of care is required, CSUs provide intensive services for up to 96 hours, including counseling, psychiatric and nursing care, medication management, and individualized treatment planning. Together, these services ensure that people in crisis receive the least-restrictive and most clinically appropriate care, reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and promoting long-term recovery in the community.
